The Ghanaian team opened the scoring in the 27th minute. Ernest Nuamah converted a penalty with his left foot, giving the Black Stars the lead. Six minutes later, Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the advantage with a direct free kick, placing the ball just inside the post with his right foot.
Trailing 2-0, Gambia quickly responded. In the 35th minute, Abdoulie Sanyang won a penalty after a foul by Gideon Mensah in the box. Mohamed Badamosi took the penalty and reduced the deficit in the 37th minute. The Scorpions continued to press and were rewarded just before halftime.
In the 42nd minute, Omar Colley equalized for Gambia with a right-footed shot, following a header assist from Yaya Bojang. The score stood at 2-2 at halftime after a particularly lively first half where each team had its moments.
