Simon Mignolet has reached out to Adnane Abid on behalf of the Belgian Football Federation. The 23-year-old forward from Standard Liège has caught the attention of Morocco, which has included him in its preliminary list for the upcoming international break.
Belgium wants to know Abid's stance regarding a potential international career with the Red Devils.
According to Belgian media outlet Sudinfo, Mignolet, who is currently the technical director of the Belgian Football Federation, has contacted Abid. The former Liverpool and Club Brugge goalkeeper seeks the forward's opinion on a possible international career with Belgium.
Morocco has taken a significant step by including Abid in its preliminary list for the next international break. The Atlas Lions will play two qualifying matches for the Africa Cup of Nations against Niger on November 13 and 17. It remains to be seen whether Abid will ultimately be included in the final squad.
The winger has already represented Belgium at the under-17 and under-19 levels during his time at KRC Genk. He has yet to make a definitive decision between the two countries. Moroccan coach Mohamed Ouahbi may call him up to the national team for the first time.
This interest is not insignificant. Abid has had an excellent start to the season at Standard Liège. In ten league matches, he has scored four goals and provided four assists.
To put this in perspective, during his first full season at this level, he only scored two goals and provided five assists. His outstanding performances have not gone unnoticed by Belgian supporters. According to Transfermarkt, the forward is now valued at six million euros.
A situation similar to Bounida and El Khannouss
In recent years, the Belgian Football Federation has seen several young talents of Moroccan descent choose to represent the Atlas Lions. Bilal El Khannouss and Chemsdine Talbi, for example, opted for Morocco instead of Belgium.
Rayane Bounida, a prospect from Ajax, also decided to play for Morocco earlier this year, despite the Federation's efforts to keep him with the Red Devils.
This choice has caused great disappointment and sparked numerous debates in Belgium. With Abid's potential departure, the Belgian Federation risks losing another talent to Morocco.
