In his first marathon, Swedish 10,000-meter European champion Andreas Almgren triumphed on Sunday, November 1, at the New York Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 1 second, while Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui won the women's race in 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 36 seconds. After setting the European 10 km record in January (26'45", since broken by Yann Schrub), winning his first international title on the track in the 10,000 meters at the European Championships in August, and claiming his first world title in September at the half marathon, the 31-year-old Swede shone in his debut at a major marathon. Staying in the lead throughout the race alongside Kenyan and Ethiopian favorites, including defending champion Benson Kipruto, Almgren managed the accelerations of his competitors before pulling away from Kipruto and finding himself at the front with Italian Yeman Crippa, winner of the Paris Marathon in the spring. In the final kilometer, the Swede ultimately outpaced the Italian to sprint towards victory, with Crippa finishing 2nd in 2h06'14", just ahead of Lesotho's Kamohelo Mofolo (2h06'26"). On the women's side, Sheila Chepkirui (2h24'36") celebrated her second victory at the New York Marathon after her win in 2024, while another top contender, her compatriot Hellen Obiri, the defending champion, finished 3rd (2h24'43"), overtaken just meters from the finish line by American Jessica McClain (2h24'43").
