The countdown to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup has begun. FIBA continues to unveil elements of the tournament's identity. The mascot, Suhail, has just been introduced.

The mascot draws inspiration from the star Canopus. Known as Suhail in the Gulf, Canopus served as a guide for navigators and others traversing the deserts and seas of the region. The selection of this communal symbol as the face of the 2027 Basketball World Cup reflects FIBA's ambition to honor the regional history within the Gulf.

Suhail's design is primarily inspired by nature. It is “crafted from crystalline facets and fragments of meteorites fused with metal.”

The 2027 Basketball World Cup is set to take place from August 27 to September 12, 2027, in Qatar. The qualifiers are ongoing and will conclude early next year.
