The Egypt U-20 national team, led by Wael Riad, will face Algeria today, Tuesday, at 4:30 PM in a crucial match for the final round of the North African qualifiers for the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations. This match serves as a gateway to the continental tournament.
The match will take place at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia, which is hosting the North African Union qualifiers from September 21 to October 6, 2026.
Egypt suffered a defeat against Morocco, losing 2-0 in the fourth round at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium.
Morocco scored both goals through Adam Boualal in the 25th minute and Sami Bouhoudan in the 33rd minute, securing the match and officially qualifying for the finals with 7 points. Egypt remains at 6 points, placing them second, while Algeria sits in third with 4 points, making the match between Egypt and Algeria decisive for the second qualification spot for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Egypt Needs a Draw or Win to Advance
The Pharaohs enter the match with a clear advantage in qualification calculations, as they need either a draw or a win against Algeria to guarantee their official qualification for the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
On the other hand, Algeria has no option but to win to surpass Egypt and claim the qualification spot, adding to the significance of the match and making it an open contest, especially since the gap between the two teams is only two points before the final round.
Egypt had a strong start in the qualifiers, winning against Libya 2-0 in the first round and then defeating Tunisia 2-1 in the second round, which raised their points to 6 and placed them at the top of the standings at that time.
The defeat against Morocco in the fourth round halted their winning streak, but it did not eliminate their chances of qualification, as the Pharaohs still control their destiny before the final match.
Wael Riad understands that facing Algeria will be different from previous matches due to the pressure from fans and the importance of the result, especially since any draw will be enough to secure the qualification spot.
The coaching staff aims to exploit the match conditions, particularly since the Algerian team will be forced to attack in search of a win, which may provide Egypt with opportunities to exploit spaces during counter-attacks, while also maintaining defensive balance and preventing the opponent from scoring early.
Riad had confirmed before the start of the qualifiers the team's readiness and the importance of competition, noting that the team underwent preparation periods, camps, and friendly matches in preparation for their journey in the qualifiers.
