Officials from European football associations expressed their strong dissatisfaction with the new system regarding extended international breaks, which requires national teams to play four consecutive matches. They described it as a "tragedy," according to discussions among representatives from several federations during a closed meeting of UEFA in Berlin.

Injuries have struck several top football stars during the recent international break, including Kylian Mbappé, who missed a number of matches for the French national team, and Norway's Erling Haaland, who requested to be substituted during his country's fourth match.

Coaches of smaller national teams also faced immense pressure regarding available resources, along with additional burdens on the time and finances of fans and sponsors.

UEFA announced it will gather opinions from member associations to consider proposing to FIFA regarding the extended 16-day international break, which combined two separate breaks (each with two matches) in September and October.

Despite the criticism, the expanded break system, which includes 4 matches at the start of the season, has already been established for the next four years within the international match calendar approved until 2030.

In that year, European teams will play 4 matches between September 23 and October 8, while next year's matches will serve as qualifiers for the UEFA Euro 2028.

European clubs have long called for a reduction in the number of international breaks while increasing their duration, aiming to minimize disruption to the season and ease long travel for players coming from outside the continent.

However, the past three weeks have not been welcomed by clubs participating in the UEFA Champions League, as Nico Kovac, coach of Borussia Dortmund, stated: "We now face a problem that is not limited to some players returning injured, but extends to completely losing momentum for two weeks or two and a half weeks. You could say we all start from scratch now."

FIFA defends the system

For its part, FIFA pointed out that longer breaks allow for regional tournaments to be held outside Europe, such as the Arabian Gulf Cup, which featured eight teams and was held in Saudi Arabia from September 23 to October 6.

FIFA had sought to compress international breaks in 2021 as part of its proposal to host the World Cup every two years, later updating the men's football match calendar.

Following the UEFA meeting, officials reported that Azerbaijan was the only country among the 55 member associations that clearly defended FIFA's management of the match calendar.

The four-match break came just two months after the conclusion of the longest World Cup ever, which was the first to feature 48 teams.

For example, Norway's competition continued until last July after reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Ståle Solbakken, Norway's coach, said after substituting Erling Haaland in his team's loss to Portugal: "For players participating in the Champions League who have had very little rest, the situation is harsher."

European teams are set to call up their players again for camps starting on November 9 to play two matches in the UEFA Nations League.
