The arrival of Idrissa Gana Gueye as an investor at Le Mans FC is sparking negative reactions in France. Organizations fighting against homophobia are calling for a boycott of the club due to the Senegalese midfielder's past actions.
The events date back to 2022. Idrissa Gana Gueye, then a member of PSG, refused to wear a jersey adorned with the rainbow symbol in tribute to LGBTQ communities. He did not travel to Montpellier for the 37th round of Ligue 1.
In a statement released this Thursday, the National Collective Against Homophobia, Racism, Anti-Semitism, and All Forms of Discrimination mentioned a “significant ethical drift.” This coalition of associations recalls “previous controversies involving the player.” For the Collective, “homophobia is not an opinion.”
“It is a crime. By integrating into its ownership a personality who has publicly rejected initiatives against discrimination, Le Mans FC prioritizes financial cynicism over ethics and republican values.”
Idrissa Gana Gueye is currently training with the Senegalese Lions of Teranga for the first two rounds of the CAN 2027 qualifiers.
