Nico Rosberg amazed by Kimi Antonelli's "incredible" composure in the 2026 F1 championship battle.

2016 Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg expressed his amazement at Kimi Antonelli’s composure throughout the 2026 season.

Antonelli bolstered his lead in the drivers’ championship with his eighth victory of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix, now holding an 81-point advantage over his teammate George Russell, who is positioned second in the rankings.

In an interview with Sky Sports F1 following the first race at the Madring circuit, Rosberg likened Antonelli's current mental state to the tremendous strain he encountered during his own championship-winning season in 2016. 

"We are all human. He's not superhuman," Rosberg remarked. "I was completely frightened; it was challenging to drive effectively. As I approached the end of the season, it felt impossible for me to win races or secure pole positions because my mind was overwhelmed with the fear of losing my dream due to a silly mistake or something that could easily occur.

"Eventually, he will have to experience that to some extent. But it’s remarkable how steady and mature he has been up to this point. Even Toto is astonished."

Antonelli commenced the 2026 season alongside his seasoned teammate George Russell as one of the leading contenders for the title. However, after becoming the youngest driver to top the standings following successive victories at the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix, the Italian has continued to build on his success. 

Despite numerous speculations about when the pressure might impact the 20-year-old, he maintains his performance as his first championship title edges closer.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff characterized Antonelli as "cool as a cucumber" during an interview with Sky Sports F1 in Madrid.

"I think he’s composed — sometimes perhaps a bit too much! When he brushes the wall five laps from the finish and comes on the radio saying 'check the car', you think 'really, again, with the white lines and walls?' But maybe that’s how he keeps himself focused," Wolff stated.

"His youth is definitely an asset because he’s 20. He could remain in this sport for 20 years with countless opportunities. He’s exceeding all our expectations and his own. He’s just going with the flow.

"There’s likely a genetic element involved. You’re either naturally calm or you’re not. You can notice this in junior formulas or karting — some handle pressure more easily than others.

"He’s elevated this to a new standard. We’re talking about Formula 1. You see junior drivers falter in Formula 2.

"He’s simply doing his thing. We told him 'this is a race where we need to bring it home, need to score points whether it’s P2 or P5, we don’t care, just drive it home'. He accomplishes that and does it quickly."
