Oscar Piastri: How a gradual deflation paved the way for an exhilarating overtaking maneuver by Lewis Hamilton

The 2026 Singapore Grand Prix proved to be a grueling battle for all teams involved, yet McLaren's Oscar Piastri emerged from the Marina Bay Street Circuit with a hard-earned fifth-place finish. Overcoming extreme temperatures and significant tyre wear, the Australian driver secured vital Constructors' points for the Woking team.
The saga of 'puncture and the pass'
Piastri's race day was notably hampered by a slow puncture that necessitated an additional unplanned pitstop, disrupting his overall race strategy. Nevertheless, this unforeseen late-race tyre situation provided him with the grip advantage required to chase down Scuderia Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton in the final laps, successfully executing an exhilarating overtake on the last lap to claim P5.
“P5. That was a hot and challenging one. Overall, it felt like a decent race," Piastri reflected after crossing the finish line. "The puncture was unfortunate, but I believe fifth place was the best we could achieve today."

Despite the mechanical hindrance, Piastri thoroughly relished his late-race battle with the seven-time world champion.
"We didn’t exactly have the pace to contend with the Red Bull and the Ferraris, although being able to take that last position from Lewis made it worthwhile, and it was an enjoyable way to end the race," Piastri acknowledged. "It was a solid amount of points for the team, so I appreciate their hard work."
A harsh reality check for McLaren
While Piastri was pleased with his personal recovery effort, he echoed the serious concerns expressed earlier in the weekend by his teammate Lando Norris and team principal Andrea Stella regarding McLaren's essential lack of speed.
“Throughout this triple-header, I've certainly felt much more at ease in the car, which has been a real positive, but we need to be realistic — we clearly aren't fast enough at this time," Piastri stated candidly.

With Mercedes and Red Bull Racing making significant advancements in recent weeks, Piastri cautioned that McLaren urgently needs an aerodynamic upgrade before the paddock heads to Austin for the United States Grand Prix.
"If we want to compete for podiums and victories, we need a substantial step forward to bridge the gap to Red Bull and Mercedes," the Australian concluded. "We have work ahead of us, but I’m optimistic we can achieve it. I’m looking forward to a brief respite before we dive into the final stretch of the season.”
