The Case of Belaili Resurfaces
The case of Algerian international player, Youssef Belaili, is back in the spotlight as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has set November 10 as the date to hear the appeal filed by the player regarding his dispute with his former club, AC Ajaccio.
The details of the case date back to the 2022-2023 season when Belaili entered into a dispute with AC Ajaccio over financial dues and related documents. The matter then moved to the corridors of FIFA amid allegations of document forgery and official paperwork issues.
In March 2026, FIFA imposed a one-year suspension on the player. This decision prompted Belaili to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
CAS had decided last August to temporarily suspend the enforcement of the penalty, allowing Belaili to return to competition and continue his career with Espérance Sportive de Tunis while awaiting a final resolution in the case.
With the hearing date set for November 10, the case enters a new phase before the sports court. However, the issuance of a final decision remains tied to the proceedings and deliberations that will follow the hearing. Setting the hearing date does not necessarily mean a ruling will be issued on the same day.
