The Gambia triumphed in the UFOA A U17 tournament last Sunday. The Baby Scorpions overcame Senegal's Lionceaux in a penalty shootout.
The final of the UFOA A U17 tournament captivated spectators at the Leopold Sédar Senghor Stadium in Dakar. The host team, Senegal, aimed for a third regional victory. However, the determination and will of the Gambian players were unwavering. After a goalless draw at the end of regulation time, both teams had to settle the match with penalties.
Chances were plentiful, nonetheless. Senegal's offensive efforts tried everything but failed to score. The Scorpions' defense managed to withstand all attacks. Initiatives from Cheikh Oumar Sy, Daouda Fofana Fall, Kader Ndour, and others were fruitless. The Gambian defense successfully contained the Lionceaux's assaults. Furthermore, Senegal finished the match with 10 players after Mahamet Ba was sent off in the 88th minute.
At the end of regulation time, Senegal completed the tournament without conceding any goals during play. However, just like in the group stage, The Gambia also managed to keep a clean sheet against Senegal during this edition of the UFOA A U17 tournament.
Assane Sarr's talent was not enough to stop the Gambian penalties. Cheikh Thior's missed shot proved decisive for the African champions. The Gambia won with a score of 5 penalties to 3.
