Patrick Vieira stands up for the key players of the Senegal national team. In a press conference following the match against Comoros, the coach of the Lions of Teranga was not pleased with Kalidou Koulibaly and Idrissa Gana Gueye being labeled as "has beens."

Idrissa Gana Gueye and Kalidou Koulibaly have reclaimed their starting positions in the Senegal lineup. In the friendly against Comoros, the captain and vice-captain upheld their roles as pivotal figures in the team. Gueye played the full match, while Idrissa Gana Gueye was substituted to applause at the Cepac Vélodrome. For Patrick Vieira, their experience in the squad deserves more respect.

“It’s a sign of disrespect towards the players being discussed. You shouldn’t bring this up. We’re talking about two players who have made and continue to shape the history of Senegal. We saw the performance they delivered today. They are reliable both on and off the pitch. This is disrespectful, and I won’t stand for it,” the former midfielder asserted.

Patrick Vieira explains the absence of the two players in the starting lineup during the CAN 2027 qualifiers as a result of competition among the squad members. The coach emphasizes that each player brings unique qualities to the team. He believes the "veterans" still have energy to contribute, as evidenced by their performances against Comoros.

“Based on the match they played today, they demonstrated their experience and individual skills that benefited the team. Selection is also about competition. Players compete among themselves, which creates challenges for me when making my choices. We’re discussing two players who have been performing at a high level for years. Their presence indicates they have qualities and values to offer this squad.”
