Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira has surfaced as the prime contender to take over as Senegal’s head coach after the team's departure from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As reported by French publication L’Equipe (via Morocco World News), the Senegalese Football Federation has begun strategizing for the national team's future following its World Cup exit, with Vieira being one of the key names under consideration to succeed Pape Thiaw.
The report suggests that the federation is in search of a coach with international expertise to guide the squad into the upcoming cycle leading up to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup qualifiers.
Vieira stands as one of France’s most accomplished former players, having been a member of the French team that clinched the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro 2000 title.

Throughout his playing days, he represented teams such as AC Milan, Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Manchester City, securing three Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Arsenal, where he captained during one of its most prosperous eras.
After hanging up his boots, Vieira transitioned into coaching, starting with the youth setup at Manchester City before taking the reins at New York City FC in Major League Soccer. He subsequently managed the French club Nice, Premier League side Crystal Palace, and most recently Strasbourg in Ligue 1.
While he has yet to manage a national team, Vieira is highly regarded for his vast experience in European football and his knack for nurturing young talent.
If he is appointed, he would be the first French manager to oversee Senegal since Alain Giresse, stepping into a role aimed at revitalizing the team to reach the pinnacle of both African and international football.
