Hugo Broos has announced that his tenure as head coach of Bafana Bafana has officially concluded after over five years at the helm.
The 74-year-old Belgian has indicated that he may still play a role with the South African Football Association (SAFA) in a capacity such as advisor or scout.
Broos assumed control of Bafana Bafana in June 2021, becoming the longest-serving coach in the history of the national team. Throughout his term, he led South Africa to a bronze medal at the 2023 AFCON, secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and made history by reaching the nation's first-ever World Cup knockout phase.
In an interview with Belgian outlet Voetbalnieuws (via The South African), Broos stated that his decision to step back from coaching is definitive. Nevertheless, he expressed willingness to stay connected with SAFA should they propose an alternative role.
“Will I continue as a coach after all? No, it is irreversible! If they require my assistance in another capacity, perhaps in scouting, that is a different matter. But football will no longer occupy my life around the clock,” Broos remarked.

The Belgian also shared that he has already spoken with SAFA president Danny Jordaan. According to Broos, the federation is interested in keeping him involved as an advisor or in a different technical capacity.
“I have already had a conversation with the chairman of the South African federation. He would like to retain me, but in a different role, as an advisor or similar. I plan to return at the end of July for a final farewell. I’m eager to see what he will propose to me.”
Broos mentioned that his wife is pleased with his retirement, although she playfully suggested he shouldn’t spend too much time at home. He acknowledged that he would be happy to travel to South Africa every few months if it meant he could still contribute to the future of the national team.
