Charles Leclerc sheds light on his vision issue following the Monza F1 incident.

Ferrari's Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc has provided new details regarding the aftermath of his crash during the Italian Grand Prix, noting that his vision issue was “very brief”.

Leclerc lost control of his vehicle at high speed on the second lap of the Monza race, colliding with the barriers at the exit of Parabolica. This marked his third retirement in the 2026 season.

The Monegasque was discharged from the medical facility but stated he would need further evaluations to confirm he was fit for this weekend’s Spanish GP in Madrid.

“The neck was fine, it was just my vision that was a bit off initially,” Leclerc commented on Sunday. “My right eye wasn’t providing clear vision, but now it’s all good, so that was my main concern when getting out of the car.”

Four days later, in the Madrid paddock, the 28-year-old reiterated that his eyesight issue had been very fleeting.

When asked if that issue caused him to doubt his ability to compete in Madrid, Leclerc responded: “No, not to that degree.”

“I did feel some tightness and a bit of pain in my neck on Monday. But in terms of vision, it was very short-lived. Right after I got into the [medical] car, one eye seemed, I don’t know, perhaps not functioning correctly – but it was completely fine after a few seconds, so I wasn’t overly concerned.

“I recognized it was a significant impact, and naturally that’s never ideal for the body, but immediately afterward I could see quite well.”

Though he was slightly battered, Leclerc mentioned that his medical assessment – which covered “quite a few aspects” – went as expected.

“It was quite a substantial impact, likely appeared significant from the outside as well, but it felt quite substantial too,” he remarked about the crash. “Sometimes it may look severe from the outside, but from inside the car, it’s manageable.

“Upon exiting, I wasn’t feeling great, but it was primarily just the shock. I underwent extensive checks and treatments in the first two days, mainly for my neck as it felt a bit tight, which I suppose is normal, but now I’m okay.

“All the evaluations I underwent were fine – I can’t really detail them, honestly… in the medical field, every check on the neck has a name that’s too complex for me to recall. I did numerous checks and everything was fine.”
