Algeria: Farid Benstiti, "We could have aimed for the AFCON"

Several weeks after winning the bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations, Farid Benstiti is already looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics. The coach of the Algerian women's national team reflects on the tournament, new recruits, and future dual nationals who could join the team.
After securing a bronze medal at the recent Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the Algerian national team is back in training. Farid Benstiti and his players are now preparing for two matches against the Central African Republic, scheduled for October 9 and 13, as part of the qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Also present at the last men's match in Tizi Ouzou, the coach praised the organization in place. "I think this is crucial. I had made the request to the Federation, and it was accepted immediately, so it's fantastic. The organization was very efficient. Moreover, coming to support our boys is essential. As I have always said, I support our national teams, from U16 to senior level, regardless of the circumstances."
Benstiti also discussed the performance of the women's team at the Africa Cup of Nations, expressing some regrets, particularly due to absences that affected his defense. "I sincerely believe that if we had been able to field a classic defense and had 100% of our capabilities, we could have won the Africa Cup of Nations. We can say that now, with all humility. I reviewed the matches, and I believe that if we had had our true defense, as well as all our substitutes, we could have gone all the way in this tournament. It didn't happen, but it's just a small regret, because we clearly had the means to achieve it. Now, our duty is to maintain our status."
For this new gathering, the coach has opened the door to several new players. He particularly highlighted Célina Ould Hocine and Nesrine Bahlouli. "Célina Ould Hocine and Nesrine Bahlouli are the most experienced among the newcomers. Regarding Célina Ould Hocine, I have wanted her to join us for some time. It was the right moment. She has reached an age where it was essential to convince her that the French team was not necessarily the best option. She needed to come with Algeria, as it is our heritage. Here, we find things that we don't see elsewhere."
Benstiti emphasized the importance of identity and family ties in convincing Ould Hocine. "I explained all of this to her in relation to family, cousins, and Algerians living here. It's something special. Even as a fervent supporter of Algeria, one can truly feel this only when regularly stepping on the land of our ancestors. Before even discussing the sports project, she naturally accepted."
Finally, the coach sent a clear message to Inès Benyahia, another player who could join the women's team. "Yes. I think Inès Benyahia should act quickly, as football evolves rapidly and an international career has its limits. We must rely on players who play in Algeria and around the world to elevate Algeria as high as possible. Inès, take this message into account: you need to come with us."
