How do the 100 journalists vote for the Ballon d'Or?
The Ballon d'Or is awarded by a panel of 100 "specialized" journalists, who select their 10 favorite players. The first receives 15 points, followed by 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.
This is not the first time such a small point gap has been observed for this prestigious trophy
In the 2019 edition, for example, Messi surpassed Virgil van Dijk by just 7 points (686 to 679).
Among former winners, Bobby Charlton triumphed with 81 points against 80 for Eusébio in 1966.
Matthias Sammer also won the Ballon d'Or with 144 points against 143 for Ronaldo in 1996 (a one-point difference).
