The President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, announced a minimum salary of 200,000 FCFA per month for each athlete selected for the Sovereignty League. This new sports initiative, revealed on Monday, October 12, 2026, in Ouagadougou, is also expected to create nearly 1,000 jobs, according to the Communication Directorate of the Presidency of Burkina Faso.
During a meeting with regional governors and various sports officials, the head of state outlined the main features of this project, which aims to promote sports practice across the entire national territory.
The governors will be tasked with coordinating the recruitment of coaches and organizing regional championships. These competitions will help select young talents to join the regional teams.
The Sovereignty League also plans a media mechanism and private sector involvement to support its operations. Ibrahim Traoré further emphasized the importance of protecting youth from social ills, such as drug and alcohol consumption, by promoting healthy sports practices.
Details regarding implementation, the schedule, and the relevant disciplines are yet to be defined.
