The government of Burkina Faso aims to enhance high-level football across various regions of the country. During the Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday, October 8, 2026, a project to establish a competition called the "Sovereignty League" was approved.
According to statements from the Minister of Sports, Youth and Employment, Annick Lydie Ouattara, this new competition is part of the Presidential Initiative for the Promotion and Development of Sporting Elites. Its goal is to bring high-level competition closer to different sports areas and ensure a more balanced distribution of sports offerings throughout the country.
"In terms of organization, we will have 20 teams, representing one team per region, with three teams for the Kadiogo region and two for the Guiriko region," the minister explained. This new competition aims to strengthen the youth pipeline and promote the Burkinabé sporting elite.
