RS Berkane must exercise caution against Star Sport Academy in the first leg of the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League. The Moroccan club, experienced in continental competitions, faces a Sierra Leonean team that has made a name for itself with its progress in the league, resilience in knockout matches, and ambitions on the African stage. The match is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 16:00 GMT, in Liberia.
Star Sport Academy did not reach the continental stage by chance. The team finished second in the Sierra Leone Premier League during the 2025-2026 season, accumulating 61 points from 34 matches, behind Bo Rangers. Their record of 16 wins, 13 draws, and only five losses demonstrates consistency throughout the season. The team also scored 45 goals while conceding 22.
Star Sport Academy's journey in the first preliminary round is another aspect to consider. Facing Medina United, a Gambian team, the Sierra Leonean side drew 0-0 in the first leg and finished with a score of 1-1 in the return leg. They secured qualification without winning either match. Star Sport Academy managed to stay focused and seize opportunities at the right moments. Against a more seasoned Berkane team, their defensive discipline and ability to capitalize on chances could once again make the difference.
The Sierra Leonean club has also organized its trip with a squad of 25 players who arrived in Liberia. The coaching staff has intensified training sessions and scheduled a friendly match against FC Fassell, a Liberian team, to help the players acclimate to their new environment. Star Sport Academy also announced the arrival of young Mesheck Lebbie on October 13, although his participation and role against Berkane remain to be confirmed.
This preparation could play a crucial role in a match where tactical elements will be decisive. It remains to be seen if Star Sport Academy can turn these strengths into results against a more experienced opponent on the continental stage.
For the Moroccans, the goal will be to assert their experience and technical skill. For Star Sport Academy, this match represents an opportunity to showcase their progress with a solid performance on the African stage.
