Espérance Sportive de Tunis faced a challenging evening on Sunday, losing 1-0 to Libyan club Al-Swehly in the first leg of the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League. This defeat puts the Blood and Gold in a difficult position ahead of their return match against the same opponent next Saturday, compounded by another setback involving Algerian international Youcef Belaïli.

The players of Espérance struggled to overcome a well-organized Libyan team. The match was ultimately decided in the second half when Ayoub Ayed converted a penalty in the 64th minute. Despite their efforts to equalize, the Tunisians could not break through the defense and will now need to turn the tide in front of their home crowd.

However, the defeat was not the only bad news for the Tunis club. At the final whistle, Youcef Belaïli was penalized by the referee. Already cautioned during the first half, the Algerian winger received a second yellow card after the match ended, resulting in his expulsion.

This sanction will have direct repercussions on Espérance's preparations for the return leg. The Algerian player, considered one of the team's offensive assets, will be suspended for the match against Al-Swehly. His absence presents an additional challenge for a Tunisian team that will need to devise strategies to secure qualification.

The next match is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at 5 PM at the Hammadi-Agrebi Stadium in Radès. To continue their continental journey, Espérance must win by at least two goals, and they will do so without one of their key offensive players. Meanwhile, Al-Swehly will aim to maintain their lead to continue their African adventure.
