Qatar: Mahrez, "This hasn't happened since the World Cup!"
After several months away from the pitch, Riyad Mahrez made his official return to competition on Saturday night with Al-Shamal SC. Coming on as a substitute against Lusail, the Algerian international shared his first impressions, mentioning his lack of rhythm, his desire to regain his instincts, and the support from the fans.
Riyad Mahrez has finally returned to the field. The former captain of the Algerian national team played his first official minutes with Al-Shamal SC on Saturday night during the sixth round of the Qatari league. Playing away against Lusail, Mahrez's team had to settle for a goalless draw (0-0).
Entering the match in the 64th minute wearing the number 26 jersey, Mahrez experienced the atmosphere of an official match nearly three and a half months after his last appearance on July 3, during the World Cup Round of 16 against Switzerland.
At the end of the match, the 35-year-old expressed his joy at being back on the pitch, while admitting that he would need more time to reach his best level. “It feels good to be back on the field, to feel the emotions of a match. It’s been a long time since I played since the World Cup. I need to regain some rhythm and time,” he stated.
The Algerian international also emphasized the importance of this first appearance to gradually restore his understanding with his new teammates. “It’s good to join the team and regain our instincts. We tried to win, but it wasn’t easy. At least we didn’t lose,” he added.
“I wanted to play, participate, and help the team”
Even though he is eager to resume competition, Mahrez reminded that his return must be gradual. “It’s been a long time since I wanted to play, participate, and contribute to the team. But it’s not about rushing my return or accumulating minutes too quickly. We need to take it slow, step by step. God willing, I will find my rhythm and be able to help my team,” he confided.
The player also discussed the playing conditions, which he found particularly challenging. Accustomed to air-conditioned stadiums during the World Cup, he acknowledged that the match today was physically demanding, while asserting that one must adapt to the circumstances.
Finally, Mahrez wanted to thank the supporters in the stands, especially the Algerians who came to witness his debut. “Thank you to all the Algerians and all the Qataris who came. It’s comforting and warms my heart to see all the fans with us,” he concluded.
With this point earned away from home, Al-Shamal now has a total of nine points and sits in fifth place. For Mahrez, this first appearance represents a crucial step in his journey to regain his form, with the goal of gradually rediscovering all his sensations.
