Six points, but still more work to do. This is the takeaway from Mali's campaign start following their 1-0 victory against Liberia on Tuesday in Monrovia.
According to Djibril Sidibé, the Eagles dominated without really posing a threat. “It was a somewhat laborious match in terms of opportunities,” analyzes the former Malian international, who also notes that his team's dominance remained largely unproductive.
It took until the 79th minute for Ange Martial Tia to break the deadlock with a pass from Kamory Doumbia. Sidibé praises the performance of the young striker, who “proves he has many qualities,” as well as that of Nathan Gassama, who was particularly strong in defense.
The former AS Monaco player nonetheless calls for more precision in the game.
“There was often haste and inaccuracies in the build-up,” he believes, also highlighting “a significant tactical and depth issue.”
Despite this, Mali remains at the top of Group K with six points, tied with Rwanda.
