Ferrari's Formula 1 racer Charles Leclerc has countered Fernando Alonso's assertion that the quality of driving at the tail end of the grid is subpar, asserting that the level is "very, very high" throughout the lineup.

Alonso expressed his concerns about the lower tier of the grid following his encounter with Williams driver Alex Albon at the recent United States Grand Prix and stood firm on his views while addressing the media in Mexico City.

"I believe the caliber of drivers in the lower tier of the grid is quite low, as we witnessed today with Alex," Alonso remarked after an incident involving Albon on the opening lap at the Circuit of the Americas.

"Thus, we need to enhance the car and position ourselves a bit higher up."

When questioned about the overall quality of the grid during the drivers' press conference in Mexico, Leclerc dismissed Alonso's remarks.

"I think it’s very high. I truly believe it’s very, very high. As I mentioned earlier, many of us on the grid grew up racing together in karting," Leclerc stated. "Alex was among the top talents and was someone I admired. He always raced one or two categories ahead of me, but he was outstanding."

Leclerc, who currently sits fifth in the drivers' rankings, further noted that the disparity between the front and rear of the field is primarily due to the cars being driven.

"Today, I am confident that the level of the grid is exceptionally high, whether at the back, in the middle, or at the front. The only factors that vary are, of course, the race cars we are piloting, but the standards remain very elevated," the Monegasque explained.

Albon, who joined Leclerc in the press conference, also took issue with Alonso's viewpoint.

"I have immense respect for Fernando; I looked up to him a great deal during my childhood, and it’s certainly disheartening to hear those comments in various ways," the Williams driver stated. "You’re competing against someone you admire, but at the same time, I disagree. It’s as straightforward as that.

"I believe the level is solid throughout the grid. A decade or 15 years ago, the back half of the grid wasn’t as competitive as it is now. We no longer have paid drivers dominating the scene."
