The UAE athletics team made history as national team runner Maryam Kareem won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the ongoing Asian Games in Japan.
The 18-year-old Kareem finished the race in first place, ahead of Kazakhstan's Adelina Zheims, who recorded 54.58 seconds, and India's Pithiya Ramraj, who finished with a time of 54.75 seconds.
The UAE also secured its first medal of the Games through Suleiman Abdul Rahman, who won the silver medal in the 400m final.
Maryam Kareem clinched the gold medal with a time of 54.31 seconds, a record-breaking achievement at the Asian Games, and the best world record for under-20 athletes for 2026.
Maryam Kareem secured her victory in the last forty meters, clocking 54.31 seconds, breaking the previous competition record held by Bahraini runner Kemi Adekoiya at 54.45 seconds.
