David Coulthard states that George Russell must "reprogram his mindset" in light of Kimi Antonelli's challenges.

George Russell is being compelled to "retrain his mindset" as he grapples with the challenge of consistently keeping pace with his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, as noted by former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard.
Initially viewed as a strong contender for the 2026 championship at the start of the season, Russell celebrated victories at the Australian Grand Prix and the Chinese sprint race, only to see his young teammate rise to the top of the leaderboard.
Following his eighth win of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix, Antonelli now boasts an 81-point advantage over Russell in the rankings.
In an episode of the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard likened Russell's current challenges to his own experiences during his early partnership with Mika Hakkinen at McLaren.
"George is certainly facing a situation for the first time similar to what I encountered when Mika and I were teammates, because when I entered Formula 1 in '94, I was immediately competitive," Coulthard detailed.
"In fact, for '95 I secured pole position in a series of five consecutive grands prix.
"From my perspective, I thought, 'This is just how it is.' I considered Damon Hill [my teammate at the time], who was more experienced and had been through the ordeal of being teammates with Ayrton [Senna] and his tragic accident; he must have found it incredibly frustrating.

"He must have been at his wit's end, and our relationship wasn't the best during that period because I was the newcomer who seemed to effortlessly snag pole positions like Kimi, without much thought behind it.
"What I came to understand as I progressed in my career and gained more experience is that sometimes you overanalyze circumstances. Kimi is currently enthusiastic and oblivious to certain challenges.
"He doesn’t realize what he doesn’t know. Meanwhile, George is thinking, 'I've always been fast. Why isn't this working?' So he’s finding himself needing to readjust his mindset while facing yet another defeat the following weekend."
