1997 Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve opines that Esteban Ocon's career in grand prix racing may come to an end when his tenure with Haas wraps up, suggesting that the French driver is facing limited prospects on the grid.

Ocon made his move to Haas in 2025 following a five-year period with Renault, which later transitioned to Alpine. In his inaugural season with the American team, the 30-year-old placed 15th in the drivers' championship but was outshone by his rookie teammate Oliver Bearman, who finished in 13th.

Bearman has continued to surpass his seasoned teammate in 2026. After 14 races, Bearman is currently 13th in the standings with 18 points, while Ocon finds himself in 18th place with just three points.

As Ocon's existing contract with Haas nears its conclusion at the end of this year, speculation regarding his future has intensified.

"The issue is, he entered the scene as a Mercedes prospect through family connections. Mercedes didn't retain him. They placed him in Alpine/Renault. Now, he's moved down the ranks to Haas," Villeneuve remarked to Sky Sports F1.

"Beyond Haas, there’s a chance of exiting Formula 1. There isn’t enough space for the young talent breaking through. There certainly isn’t enough space for a driver like Esteban.

"While he possesses a wealth of experience, how impressive have his last two seasons been? He hasn't been particularly outstanding in those seasons. Teams may not be inclined to consider him with the influx of new talent, so it's time to explore alternatives.

"It would be risky not to seek opportunities outside of F1, because the available options within F1 are exceedingly limited, aside from a third driver role, but what would be the point?"

Three-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick, who joined Villeneuve on the broadcast, responded when asked if Ocon had been afforded enough chances to demonstrate his abilities: "I would say so. And I think he’s had moments where he has shown his potential, but to secure one of those full-time seats with Ollie Bearman, who has come in and performed so well, I don't think so.

"It’s similar to Kevin Magnussen, for instance, who is now thriving in sportscars. So there’s no doubt he will remain in the sport for a long time, or at least I hope he does, but perhaps not in Formula 1."
