After a challenging 2026 Singapore Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team secured a vital third-place finish, earning yet another important podium. While Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing showcased dominance to win the race ahead of Scuderia Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, Antonelli's finish lays the groundwork for a significant championship celebration.

In the post-race discussions, former world champion Jenson Button revealed to the young rookie that he mathematically has a chance to secure the World Drivers' Championship in the upcoming race in Austin, Texas.

A strategic podium for Antonelli

Despite facing severe and well-documented braking challenges on the starting grid before the race, Antonelli delivered a shrewd performance. The Italian driver clinched his podium spot by seizing the opportunity during an intense on-track contest between McLaren's Lando Norris and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.

"Yeah, I mean, it was a very tough race out there, but really happy with the podium at the end," Antonelli shared with Button after the event. "I managed to take advantage of the fight between Lando and Lewis, and to make the move on both, and to bring home P3 is a great result for the team."

The Austin clinching scenario

While Antonelli was visibly content with his on-track performance, he was genuinely taken aback when Button pointed out that the upcoming United States Grand Prix could potentially mark his championship clincher.

"Can I? Really?" Antonelli replied in astonishment. "Well, let's not worry about that."

Rather than getting ahead of himself or making bold predictions about a title celebration in Texas, the championship leader remains focused on executing a flawless race at the Circuit of the Americas.

"Let's aim for the best weekend possible and finish the job," Antonelli concluded.
