Lando Norris: “There’s no justification” for the gap to Oscar Piastri in Singapore

Lando Norris states he has “no justification” for his subpar showing in sprint qualifying at Formula 1’s Singapore Grand Prix.

After finishing seventh in SQ1, just 0.020s ahead of his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, and claiming third in SQ2, 0.534s quicker than the Australian, Norris ultimately secured fifth in the top-10 shootout. He was outpaced by Piastri by 0.133s in that final segment.

“I just don’t believe I delivered a very strong lap,” the Briton confessed. “That’s all, no justification.”

Following fuel injection complications in Baku and Malaysia that limited the MCL40’s top speed, McLaren implemented a remedy at Marina Bay.

When asked if he was content with that resolution, Norris replied: “I think so, based on what I’ve observed so far. To be honest, I don’t have all the details just yet. The team is still investigating, and it's been a hectic day.

“A lot of aspects seem promising. We appear to be closer as a unit. Simply put, I didn’t perform well enough.”

On the other hand, Piastri outperformed his teammate for the third time in the last five sessions – including Baku, where Norris particularly struggled with the fuel injection issue – after experiencing an 8-0 setback from Barcelona to Zandvoort.

“Quite pleased with that,” Piastri stated, having secured fourth place in Singapore. “I think that was pretty much the best we could have achieved. It’s very, very challenging during a sprint weekend to extract all the lap time from the car here.

“I felt like the soft tires came alive much more. I was having difficulties with the mediums, but once we switched to the softs, I felt quite good. So, yeah, not a bad performance.”

The initial section of the track was a point of emphasis for the McLaren driver. “I was facing some challenges with a few aspects of the car there,” he admitted. “It was somewhat improved now.

“Just the overall sensation of the car, you know, it’s no different from what it usually is. You really have to push it to be fast. Once we added a bit more grip with the softs, it was somewhat better. But, yeah, it’s still a challenge.”
