Lando Norris adopts a strong position on F1 retirement following Fernando Alonso's contract extension.

2025 Formula 1 champion Lando Norris has decisively dismissed the idea of prolonging his racing career into his 40s, expressing no inclination to emulate Fernando Alonso.
Alonso recently announced his intention to remain with Aston Martin through 2027, just before the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend in Malaysia. This contract renewal will see the veteran Spaniard competing in the series at the age of 46.
During an interview with BeIN Sports Asia at the Sepang International Circuit, Norris was inquired about his future in racing and whether he envisioned himself participating into his 40s.
"No chance," the McLaren driver responded. When further questioned if this was specifically regarding F1 or motorsport as a whole, Norris clarified that it signified a complete retirement from driving. "In racing in general. No chance," he reiterated.
The F1 calendar requires significant commitments from its drivers, and Norris highlighted his aspiration for a regular life beyond the racetrack as his primary reason for a future departure.
"Because I don't want to," he elaborated. "I want to return home and unwind, then travel with my friends, and start a family. I don’t wish to be here indefinitely, so I strive to make the most of my time while I’m here."
However, fans need not be concerned; the reigning champion is not planning to leave anytime soon. Although the 26-year-old ruled out competing into his 40s, he remains contracted with McLaren until at least the conclusion of the 2030 season, by which time he will be 31 years old.
"McLaren is my home, and I’m very happy to have signed a new contract that secures my place with the team until at least 2030," Norris stated upon signing the contract extension in August 2026.
"When I embarked on this journey nine years ago, I was clear about the objectives I aimed to accomplish: to restore McLaren to the forefront and to secure championships. We’ve reached that goal, yet we aspire for more; we want to continue winning, and we recognize as a team that we have the capacity to achieve it."
Norris is currently positioned fourth in the drivers' standings with 186 points, trailing championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 116 points.
