Four-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen stated that it is "normal" for F1 drivers and team personnel to experience illness at this point in the season, following the absence of two drivers from Thursday's media engagements in Mexico City.

Current championship leader Kimi Antonelli was excused from media responsibilities as he recuperates from a viral infection, with Mercedes anticipating the Italian driver will be back on the track for Friday's practice session. Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas also missed media day due to illness, which the American team labeled as a precautionary measure.

Mexico marks the second race of a triple-header, coming after the United States Grand Prix last week and preceding the Brazilian Grand Prix next week. The final nine race weekends of the 2026 season are structured into three sets of triple-headers, each separated by one-week intervals.

While addressing the media in Mexico, Verstappen was inquired about the challenges posed by the series of races.

"It is, of course, always quite challenging on your body, like three weeks in a row. Sometimes you can encounter a bit of misfortune with something like a stomach bug," the Dutch driver elaborated.

"However, it's typically around this time of year that not only drivers but also mechanics and team members fall ill. Your body can endure a substantial amount of stress, but at some point, it signals when it requires a recovery phase.

"That's something you need to manage effectively. Some years are easier than others. I believe you learn a bit more about it with each season. Occasionally, there are factors beyond your control. But without a doubt, it's always quite demanding.

"For me, the hardest part is that you can't really return home in between to spend time with family. That aspect is something I no longer enjoy about triple-headers."
