Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton will occupy the front row for the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, setting the stage for an exhilarating race start that has supporters eager to witness the revival of their past rivalry.

Verstappen clinched pole position at the Sepang International Circuit, finishing ahead of Hamilton by 0.298 seconds. Completing the top five in qualifying were Red Bull's Isack Hadjar, Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. However, Hadjar will incur a five-place grid penalty.

Online fan reactions have dubbed the upcoming dash to Turn 1 as "absolute cinema" and reminiscent of "the good old days".

"Tomorrow we might all wake up to find it's still 2017 and the last 9 years were merely a dream," a fan commented on Reddit, while another remarked: "Absolute cinema every time it happens."

"Max and Hamilton on the front row in Sepang. Roll back the years," another user posted.

One more comment read: "Verstappen and Hamilton proving why they are the OGs."

Additional comments included: "No other driver pairing at the front of the grid stirs anticipation and nerves for the race quite like Max and Lewis do. I expect an exciting contest tomorrow if the Ferrari can maintain its pace," and "Outstanding performance by both Max and Lewis. Reminiscent of the 2021 season. RBR upgrades seem effective as both drivers made it to the top 3, though Hadjar is facing the penalty."

Notably, Hamilton has begun from the front row in the last five races at Sepang, and the previous instance he shared the front row with Verstappen was during the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Verstappen characterized his pole position, the first of the 2026 season, as "fantastic".

"We've been striving for pole at various grands prix," the four-time champion stated after qualifying. "Sometimes we were a bit closer than others, but to finally achieve it, considering where we started the season, is quite remarkable."

"I'm pleased with today, and certainly, I aim to win tomorrow. Starting from first, that's the goal."
