Moroccan coach Mohamed Ouahbi has addressed the controversy surrounding Ajax midfielder Sofyan Amrabat. The Amsterdam player recently decided to no longer represent Morocco under the current coach.
On September 8, Amrabat announced on his Instagram account that he no longer wishes to play under the current national team coach, Ouahbi. The Ajax midfielder will only return to the pitch after the Moroccan Football Federation appoints a new coach.
Out of “respect for the individuals involved”, Amrabat did not disclose the reasons for his decision. The national coach has since commented on the situation.
Ouahbi provided some clarification on the reasons behind Amrabat's decision. “It’s not easy to have a status like his and to accept that younger players have more playing opportunities. There is no conflict between Amrabat and me, nor with the staff. In football, the past deserves respect, but it does not confer any advantage,” Ouahbi stated at his latest press conference.
As a result, Amrabat was not selected by Ouahbi for the upcoming international break. Ajax player Abdellah Ouazane has been called up to the Moroccan national team for the first time.
