Oscar Piastri: What contributed to my speed last season has now become my “downfall.”

McLaren's Oscar Piastri has acknowledged that the qualities which positioned him as a title contender in the 2025 Formula 1 season have transformed into his greatest challenges as he strives to adjust to this year's regulations.

The Australian currently sits seventh in the championship standings with only 138 points and has yet to secure a grand prix victory this season. His teammate, reigning champion Lando Norris, is just one spot ahead, boasting a significantly higher total of 201 points. With the F1 circuit now entering its American triple-header, Piastri feels he is gradually becoming more at ease with the car.

“I’m definitely not yet at the level I aspire to reach, but I’m back in the vicinity where I should be. It’s been evident that this year has posed challenges regarding grasping the nuances of this season’s car.

“However, I feel that in recent weeks, things have begun to click a bit more. It remains quite challenging, but we’re discovering ways to adapt.”

He conceded that not much has changed with the car itself, indicating that the majority of the adjustments have been focused on his personal development.

“We’ve explored various strategies; this year's challenges cannot be swiftly resolved. I believe that even attempting to fix it as a whole is quite difficult,” he added.

“We’ve been experimenting with different approaches. It’s required significant effort on my part to adapt to the car, as the characteristics that often benefitted me last year have become the very factors hindering my performance this season.

“When you can’t depend on the aspects you usually rely on, it’s always a challenge—not only in the adaptation process but also, when you’ve been accustomed to certain things working for you for an extended period, shifting away from that presents a mental hurdle as well.

“I feel we are making strides, and things are beginning to feel somewhat more comfortable, but there’s still progress to be made.”

Piastri’s remarks come on the heels of his admission following a tough Singapore Grand Prix, where he stated that McLaren has “no magic solutions” this season, and team principal Andrea Stella noted that significant changes to the car won’t occur until next year.

McLaren currently stands third in the constructors’ championship, maintaining a seven-point lead over a rapidly advancing Red Bull, whose Max Verstappen has just achieved two consecutive grand prix victories. The papaya-colored team will be optimistic that this newfound performance at Milton Keynes can take a breather at the Circuit of the Americas.
