Liverpool fought hard. At home, the Reds even had a strong spell after halftime, creating good opportunities, but Gianluigi Donnarumma stood firm, denying Lewis Koumas and then Ryan Gravenberch. The latter received a second yellow card for a foul on Jérémy Doku, who was breaking away (62nd minute), which changed the course of the match. His dismissal allowed City, with a numerical advantage, to break through Liverpool.

Indeed, three minutes later, Jérémy Doku surged down the left flank, rounded the box, and shot. The deflected ball fell to Erling Haaland, who instinctively struck it with one touch to beat Alisson. Doku, once again, repeated the same action, this time with a powerful strike into the top corner, drawing admiration from his coach, Enzo Maresca.

Ultimately, it was Rayan Cherki who finished the festival, after a brilliant one-two with Josko Gvardiol, leaving Jeremie Frimpong behind with a delicate feint before scoring from close range. Thus, City strengthened their lead at the top, now three points ahead of Arsenal, who had drawn level (15 points) thanks to a victory over Leeds.

The financial scandal overshadowed the stands

The match was tinged with the hot news surrounding Manchester City, recently found guilty of serious violations of Premier League financial regulations. Jeering chants, whistles, and hostile banners greeted the Cityzens at Anfield. In the stands, Liverpool supporters unfurled several banners stating “All your stars are fading,” referring to the titles won during the incriminating period, and “A generation of supporters has been cheated.”

In the away section, Man City fans displayed inflatable bananas, a symbol used in the 1980s when the club faced tough times. Their message was clear: “We were here before these owners, we will always be here, having fun, supporting our team.”

Merchandise stalls also displayed messages aimed at the Mancunians, accused of artificially inflating their revenues and minimizing their costs by over £900 million (more than €1 billion) during the relevant period. On a sky blue flag, in Man City's colors, current and former players were depicted, with ex-coach Pep Guardiola dressed as a prisoner, accompanied by the mentions “114 charges” and “guilty.”

The clash between City and the Reds was the first match played by Manchester City since the club, primarily backed by Emirati capital, was found guilty of large-scale financial misconduct between 2009 and 2018, at the end of September by an independent commission.
