Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni said on Friday that he made a "great effort" to convince Lionel Messi to return to the national team for a farewell match shortly after announcing his retirement, as he was unsure of his own future as head coach for organizing this match later.

Scaloni told reporters on Thursday: "I think a player like him deserves this. Personally, I did my duty because I wanted to be present at his farewell ceremony."

He added: "Since I wasn't sure I would be here later, we did everything we could to ensure he could participate in this match. We knew what he was going through, yet he showed the desire and effort needed to come and say goodbye to his fans, those who love him passionately."

Scaloni spoke about Messi, saying: "If we want to honor him, we must do it quickly... we might lose the magic of the moment if we delay."

Scaloni's contract, which saw him lead Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and two Copa America trophies, will end in December.

In response to a question about any updates regarding his future, Scaloni said he would meet with Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia in the coming days.

The 48-year-old coach said: "It’s a dream come true, but that doesn’t mean I should stay in this position forever."

He added: "There are some conditions we need to discuss with the president, and we will see if we can reach an agreement."

Messi announced his international retirement in August, shortly after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final.

However, weeks later, Scaloni invited the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward to play in a final farewell match in a friendly against Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires on October 6.

Scaloni told reporters on Thursday: "I think a player like him deserves that. Personally, I did my duty because I wanted to be present at his farewell ceremony."

He noted that: "Since I wasn't sure I would be here later, we did everything we could to ensure he could play in this match. We knew what he was going through, yet he showed the desire and effort needed to come and say goodbye to his fans, those who love him passionately."
