Sergio Perez: First season with Cadillac "undoubtedly one of my finest years"

When examining Sergio Perez's statistics from the 2026 Formula 1 season, one might describe the season as catastrophic.

So far, Cadillac has yet to earn a point, although the Mexican driver came close during the Monaco Grand Prix, where he managed to elevate the MAC-10 to tenth place before incurring a penalty. However, while the statistics provide part of the narrative, it is essential to consider the broader context, which isn't always captured in the final results.

For example, the performance in Baku is noteworthy, as he was competitive for a top 10 finish from the outset. Likewise, Singapore should not be ignored, where he nearly established a lap lead over his teammate Valtteri Bottas—circumstances that the standings do not reflect.

In a candid interview with Motorsport.com, Perez was asked if he would label 2026 as his most challenging season, to which he responded firmly: "No, not at all."

"In terms of results, obviously, but I believe that those who understand the sport can recognize the level at which I am competing and the consistent performance I’ve delivered, and they can appreciate the quality of the year I’ve had."

Up until now, in every season he has participated, he has scored points, starting from his debut with Sauber in 2011 through to his final year with Red Bull in 2024. Now, that achievement appears unlikely with six races left in the season.

Nevertheless, for Perez, it is crucial to consider all factors surrounding this inaugural season, where he has had to take the lead and develop a project from the ground up with a car that has seen numerous adjustments since the first race to tackle reliability issues, leading to his current role as the team's leader, guiding development and, when conditions permit, competing against the midfield.

"Ultimately, Formula 1 relies significantly on the performance of your car to achieve great results," he remarked.

"In the end, we have individuals with extensive knowledge of this sport, including my team, and they recognize the level I am competing at."

When asked how he would rank 2026 in relation to his career and the performance of the car he’s had, he expressed: "I consider it one of my best years. Without a doubt, in terms of confidence, driving skill, decision-making, and leadership, it’s certainly one of my best seasons."

"I am involved in something incredibly significant and foundational to a new project. My input holds considerable weight here, and I feel that, as a driver, it comes with a lot of responsibility as well."
