Vozinha (40 years old) has been selected for the Yashin Trophy, which honors the best goalkeeper of the year. When he received the news, the Cape Verdean keeper initially thought it was a joke.
Vozinha made a strong impression during last summer's World Cup. The goalkeeper was crucial in Cape Verde's journey, helping the team advance from the group stage and surprising teams like Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia.
His remarkable performances earned him a transfer to the Chilean top-flight club, Colo-Colo, later that summer. More recently, he also received a nomination for the Yashin Trophy, which was awarded last year to Gianluigi Donnarumma of Manchester City.
“Many will consider this unfair, and in some ways, I feel that too. When I learned the news, I thought it was a joke,” Vozinha told France Football.
“I mention this because I have deep respect for those exceptional goalkeepers who play in the best clubs and leagues. I see this nomination primarily as recognition for all of Cape Verde. At this stage of my career and life, it is a true gift from heaven. I want to thank everyone who nominated me.”
