Since the creation of the World Athletics Championships fifty-three years ago, Africa has never hosted the senior edition of this event. Nairobi aims to change this in 2029, with a bid supported by Kenya's expertise in organizing international competitions. World Athletics will announce its decision in September 2026.
The Kenyan city has already been the site of major competitions organized by the international federation. It hosted the U18 World Championships in 2017 and the U20 World Championships four years later. Additionally, it regularly organizes the Kip Keino Classic.
Beyond its infrastructure and organizational experience, Kenya has a particularly close connection to athletics. The country has produced numerous iconic Olympic and world champions, which strengthens its determination to one day host the biggest global event in this discipline.
