Senegalese football icon Sadio Mané has declared his retirement from international play, concluding an illustrious 14-year journey with the Lions of Teranga.
The 34-year-old made his announcement in a statement released by Le Quotidien (via Citi Sports) on Friday, shortly after Senegal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup quest ended with a 3-2 extra-time loss to Belgium in the Round of 32.
Mané departs from the national team as one of the all-time greats in Senegalese football, having earned 130 caps since his debut in 2012.
The ex-Liverpool striker played a crucial role in Senegal’s most significant football accomplishment by leading the nation to victory in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after being runners-up in 2019.
Although he has stepped back from international football, Mané is anticipated to continue his club career with Saudi Pro League team Al-Nassr, where he is contracted until 2027.
In his farewell address, the former captain of Senegal expressed gratitude to fans for their steadfast support throughout his international career.

“Understand that I gave everything for this flag. I poured my heart into it and always fought hard for our nation.”

He also recognized the influence fans had on his achievements.
“Your unwavering support has fueled my success.”
Even after his exit from international duty, Mané expressed his desire to remain engaged in Senegalese football in another role.
The two-time African Footballer of the Year stated his willingness to share his expertise with the national team or in football governance moving forward.
“In the future, I will gladly offer my experience to the Nation, whether as part of a coaching staff, on the sidelines, or within the administrative bodies.”
Prior to his time at Al Nassr, Mane played for renowned European clubs Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
While at Liverpool, he collected the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup titles.
During his stint with Bayern Munich, he secured the Bundesliga championship and the German Super Cup.
