Qatar: What is the situation regarding the departure of young Algerian talents?

For the past two days, a new controversy regarding the exodus of young talents to Qatar has sparked discussions in Algeria. What is the current status of this issue that was raised nearly five years ago?

This weekend, a young Algerian U17 international, Yacine Abed, who was trained at Paradou AC, reportedly decided to head to Qatar instead of returning to his club after participating in a training camp with the national team, according to reports from El Khabar.

This 16-and-a-half-year-old attacking midfielder is considered one of the most promising young talents from the academy and undoubtedly the best player of 2010 in Algeria. He impressed greatly with the U17 team during the CAN last month, scoring a brace against South Africa.

In early September, Abed was integrated into the U16 team led by Karim Ziani, which has been renamed U17(B), as it will participate in the qualifiers for the U17 CAN 2027, while the U17(A) team under Amine Ghimouz is preparing for their World Cup in Qatar.

Indeed, excluded from the World Cup, the player reportedly received an offer from Al Ahli, a Qatari first division club, hinting at a possible change of sporting nationality by 2030...

This is likely one of the reasons that led the player to settle in Qatar, where his parents have recently moved. This could allow him to navigate FIFA's rules regarding transfers of minors by citing family reunification.

The case of Omar Rafik

Nearly four years ago, we mentioned the case of several young players primarily from Paradou AC or the FAF academy, who made the leap by signing with various Qatari clubs. Today, only one of them has truly made a name for himself.

There is little coincidence in this kind of journey, as it involves Mohamed Omar Rafik, nicknamed Hamoudi, the best player of his generation (2004), who notably caught attention during the Mediterranean Games in Oran in 2022.

After signing with Paradou, he joined Al Shamal in February 2023 for 500,000 euros and gradually found his place. Last season, he scored 7 goals and provided 6 assists, contributing to his club's historic second-place finish, qualifying for the Asian Champions League.

Since the summer of 2022, Omar Rafik - now 22 years old - has not participated in any matches with the Algerian national teams. Starting in February 2027, he will enter his fifth year of residency in Qatar and will be eligible for a change of sporting nationality...
