The opening events of the 12th African University Games "Cairo 2026" began today, Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with over 2,000 participants, including students and administrators, representing 18 African countries and 82 universities. This university sports event showcases the diversity and richness of sports across the African continent.
Squash Competitions Begin
The American University in New Cairo is hosting squash events today, while badminton matches are taking place at the Club Club in the New Administrative Capital, featuring students from the participating African universities.
The 12th African University Games "Cairo 2026" hold special significance as they coincide with the celebration of African Union Day and World University Sports Day, in addition to the African University Sports Federation celebrating its 55th anniversary. This makes the event a platform to celebrate the development of African university sports, bringing together the continent's youth around values of competition, cooperation, and friendship, while opening new horizons for communication and building a shared future.
The event is supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, led by Dr. Abdel Aziz Qansoua, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Acting Minister of Culture, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, headed by Jawhar Nabil, the African University Sports Federation, chaired by Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, Vice President of the Higher Committee for the 12th African University Games, and the Egyptian University Sports Federation under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Kamel Mahdi, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the event.
The "Cairo 2026" Games will run until September 16, under the slogan "One Flame.. One Continent."
