Auxerre said an emotional goodbye to Gideon Mensah following his transfer to FC Köln.
French side AJ Auxerre has delivered a touching tribute to Ghanaian international Gideon Mensah following his move to Bundesliga club FC Koln on a free transfer. Mensah departs the Ligue 1 team after four seasons, having made the switch from Austrian club RB Salzburg in the summer of 2022. Throughout his tenure, the 27-year-old accumulated 114 appearances and became one of Auxerre's most reliable players.
In their farewell message, Auxerre commended the left-back’s impact, emphasizing his contribution to the club's 2024 Ligue 2 championship victory and their successful efforts to maintain their Ligue 1 status in the subsequent seasons. "A great adventure comes to an end between AJA and Gideon Mensah," the club stated. "Champion of Ligue 2 in 2024, the Ghanaian international played a crucial role in AJA's return to the top tier before being instrumental in the club's two consecutive stays in Ligue 1."
The club also acknowledged Mensah's character and professionalism, stating, "Combative, generous, and always impeccable on the pitch, Gide will leave a remarkable legacy at AJA and with all its supporters." Auxerre wrapped up by wishing the Black Stars defender all the best as he embarks on a new journey in the Bundesliga with FC Koln.
