CAF reveals important timelines for the 2026/27 Champions League and Confederation Cup.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the complete schedule for the 2026/27 Interclub tournaments - the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. Defending African champions Mamelodi Sundowns lead the nation’s quest after breaking their lengthy drought for continental success last season. Miguel Cardoso's squad will now strive to accomplish what no other South African team has achieved by successfully defending the CAF Champions League title. Alongside Sundowns in Africa's top club tournament are Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates, who narrowly defeated the Brazilians for the domestic championship in the 2025/26 season. Additionally, Kaizer Chiefs and Nedbank Cup victors Durban City will represent South Africa in the CAF Confederation Cup. CAF's timetable indicates that the preliminary rounds will commence in September, although the official draws have yet to be held. The first preliminary round will occur over two weekends, with first-leg matches slated for 4-6 September 2026, followed by the return fixtures on 11-13 September. The second preliminary round, which will include all remaining teams in the competitions, is scheduled for a month later. First legs are planned for 16-18 October, while the crucial second legs will be conducted on 23-25 October. As Africa's top-ranked club, Sundowns are anticipated to receive a bye into the second preliminary round of the Champions League. Chiefs may also gain a similar edge in the Confederation Cup, depending on the current club standings, although CAF has yet to finalize the seedings.
