African Championship: Volleyball Team Eliminates Defending Champion Egypt, Advances to Semifinals
The national volleyball team achieved a remarkable qualification to the semifinals of the 2026 African Championship held in Tunisia from September 15 to 25.
The Algerian team eliminated the defending champion Egyptian team in a thrilling quarterfinal match that saw several lead changes and extended to a decisive fifth set, setting up a clash with Cameroon in the semifinals.
The "Greens" started the match strongly, taking the first set 25-17.
Egypt then leveled the match by winning the second set 25-20. They continued their strong performance in the third set, which ended 25-19 in their favor, putting them just one set away from qualification.
However, the national team refused to give up and came back strongly in the fourth set, winning it 25-23, forcing the Egyptians into a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, the "Greens" imposed their game and secured victory with a score of 15-13, ensuring their place in the semifinals at the expense of the defending champion Egyptian team.
Thus, the national volleyball team continues its journey in the championship, which offers more than just the continental title.
The winner of the title will secure a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, while the top three teams will qualify for the 2027 World Championship.
