The International Football Federation (FIFA) is considering making significant changes to its controversial Peace Prize or even abolishing it, following increasing objections to awarding it to former U.S. President Donald Trump last year.

Infantino had announced at the beginning of Thursday's meeting that the Peace Prize file would be referred to the social responsibility committee, before council members later returned to discuss it during a series of questions about the potential for conflicts of interest within FIFA.

Concerns Over Diplomatic Crisis

According to The Guardian, there is a strong belief among FIFA Council members that the award in its current form is facing criticism due to its association with Trump, while some members expressed concerns that the U.S. president might object and provoke a diplomatic crisis if he is dissatisfied with the identity of the next recipient.

The FIFA social responsibility committee consists of 22 members, the majority of whom represent countries that support Infantino, which may help avoid the cancellation of the award to prevent embarrassing the federation president, despite a broad consensus within the council on the need to change its current format.

The newspaper quoted one council member stating that the most likely scenario discussed was to reframe the award as a tribute to a football figure who has made exceptional contributions to promoting social cohesion and social responsibility, with a stipulation that it cannot be awarded to any political figure.

Controversy Over Trump's Honor

Article 2 of FIFA's statutes prohibits any political or governmental interference in football affairs, which is one of the reasons that sparked outrage from many federation members when the decision was made to honor Trump last year.

FIFA announced the establishment of the Peace Prize last November, stating that it aims to "honor individuals who have taken extraordinary and unusual actions for peace, thereby contributing to uniting people around the world."

The award was presented to Trump during the men's World Cup draw ceremony in Washington last December, where Infantino gave him a golden trophy, medal, and certificate, but the mechanism FIFA used to select the U.S. president has not yet been disclosed to the public.

The social responsibility committee is expected to establish strict criteria for any new format of the award if it is retained, in addition to providing details regarding the nomination and selection processes, in an attempt to address the criticisms directed at it.

The British newspaper The Guardian reported that Trump may become the only political figure to receive the FIFA Peace Prize, after FIFA President Gianni Infantino was asked during a FIFA Council meeting on Thursday to make substantial changes to the award or to cancel it.

The newspaper clarified that a group of council members called for the award's cancellation, while others urged for it to be separated from political conflicts, with FIFA's social responsibility committee expected to make a recommendation on this matter before the council's next meeting in Doha on December 16.
