Algeria team: 2 new defenders added to Hemdani's squad

The defense continues to be the weak point for the Algerian team. After a gathering in September that raised many questions, Brahim Hemdani is exploring other options. The national coach has identified two players based in Europe: Abdenour Soualhia, who plays for Telstar in the Netherlands, and Fahem Benaissa-Yahia, a member of Mantova in Italy's Serie B. Both athletes are expected to join the training camp in November, which will feature a doubleheader against Togo as part of the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Hemdani aims to rekindle competition in defense
During the last international window, the coach assessed nearly all the defenders at his disposal. None of them truly convinced him. The shortcomings observed in repositioning and ball distribution prompted the staff to broaden their search rather than stick with the same choices.
This observation is not surprising. From his initial selections, the coach has shown a desire for renewal, as evidenced by his first list, which included ten returns and eight exclusions. The defensive sector, on the other hand, struggles to find stability.

Soualhia, a profile already noted by the national staff
The name of the Telstar defender is not entirely unknown among the Greens' entourage. He had been mentioned before the announcement of the first group called up by the new staff but was ultimately not selected. This time, his consistency on the field in the Netherlands works in his favor.
At 20 years old, according to several Algerian media outlets, he has been a regular starter and shows a consistency that contrasts with the irregularity of some of his competitors. His journey, which began in the lower divisions of French football, reflects rapid progress.
For Hemdani, the stakes are twofold: to rejuvenate an aging defense and to integrate a player accustomed to a tactically demanding league. It remains to be seen how well he can adapt to the very particular context of the national team.
Benaissa-Yahia offers an option on the left flank
The second name mentioned concerns the left side. At 24 years old, the Mantova fullback has encouraging statistics: one goal and one assist in ten matches across all competitions, including the Italian league and the national cup.
This performance interests a staff looking to strengthen the offensive play on the wings. Serie B, known for its physical intensity and defensive density, also provides a good learning ground for a player on the verge of evolving at the international level.
His potential call-up does not guarantee anything, of course. However, it illustrates a method: to widen the pool of observable players before establishing a hierarchy.
The November gathering and Togo as a decisive test
The upcoming gathering promises to be crucial. After expressing his dissatisfaction following the last window, the coach hinted that significant changes would occur before the matches against Togo. The arrival of these two players would fit perfectly into this approach.
The Greens' performance in Group I has been decent in terms of results, with a victory against Zambia to start the campaign, followed by a draw in Burundi. However, the quality of play has not been reassuring, particularly during defensive phases where the Algerians conceded too many dangerous chances.
Nothing is yet official regarding these two reinforcements. The final list will be crucial, and it is eagerly awaited by supporters who demand, above all, a defense that is finally reliable.
