Two of the biggest clubs in the Premier Soccer League were eliminated from CAF interclub competitions on the same day. Defending champions and strong title contenders, Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a shocking defeat in the Champions League against Angola's Wiliete SC (0-0 in the first leg, 1-1 in the second leg), going out on the away goals rule.

In the CAF Confederation Cup, the disappointment was equally great for Kaizer Chiefs. Facing Zambians Red Arrows, the Amakhosi won the second leg 1-0, leveling the tie (1-0, 0-1). However, in the decisive penalty shootout, the Soweto club ultimately succumbed, losing 3-2 on penalties.

Seeing defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and the institution of Kaizer Chiefs exit the competition on the same day is a real shock across the continent. This double early elimination highlights the intense rivalry among African clubs and creates a significant void for the remainder of the CAF tournaments.
