The Burkina Faso national team coach, Amir Abdou, has discussed the return of Issoufou Dayo to the national squad for the 3rd and 4th rounds of the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The defender from Wydad Casablanca had announced his international retirement last January, following the Africa Cup of Nations.
“Issoufou Dayo is an emblematic player for our team. He went through a phase where he considered ending his career. Today, he is delivering remarkable performances with Wydad Casablanca. I took the opportunity to meet with him to discuss. I am aware of his importance, particularly in terms of leadership. He is a respected player who holds a significant place within the national team,” said the coach.
Amir Abdou also emphasized that Dayo's return does not undermine the performances of the defenders currently in the squad. He specifically mentioned the recent performances of his players as well as the illness period that Edmond Tapsoba went through.
“I explained to Issoufou Dayo that his return must fit into a competitive framework. I do not guarantee him a starting position. He will have to fight to earn his place against the players already present. He understood the message well and accepted this challenge. I know he is a competitor and will do everything to play. But beyond his sporting skills, I also expect a lot from him in terms of collective dynamics, group management, and especially his leadership,” added the coach.
The Wydad AC defender will therefore need to fight to secure his spot in a defensive line where competition is fierce. Amir Abdou is also counting on his experience to strengthen leadership within the Stallions.
