Izak Akakpo had a memorable moment this Monday in Lomé. The young defender participated in the first training session of the Hawks at the Kégué Stadium, a place he had visited during his childhood. Ten years later, he returned to the pitch wearing the Togolese national team jersey.
After training, the Togolese international expressed his emotions about this unique experience.
“Honestly, it’s a pride to be in this stadium, to be at home. I was here ten years ago when I was young. I was told: ‘I hope one day you will step on this pitch with cleats.’ And today, it’s a childhood dream come true.”
However, Akakpo wants to quickly focus on the sporting objective. Togo is preparing for its debut in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and will face Burundi, followed by Zambia. The defender emphasizes the importance of the group's mindset and the need to stay focused.
“We know it’s crucial; it’s a decisive match for qualification. But we have a good dynamic. I think the two gatherings were encouraging. We will continue on this path to achieve victory. It is essential that we focus on ourselves. We need to give our all.”
For Akakpo, the opponent is ultimately less important than the commitment of the Hawks. The player urges his teammates to fight fully to achieve the expected results.
“No matter the opponent, qualification will be difficult. Whether it’s Burundi, Algeria, or Zambia, we must give our best and bring home the victory. Honor our commitment. And above all, support our teammates on the field. Give everything for our country and the Togolese jersey.”
Regarding the team, the group is expected to be complete on Tuesday with the arrival of the other players. Another point to watch is the situation of captain Djene Dakonam, whose presence remains uncertain.
